What would Oprah Do?
I have 2 strange obsessions - new jersey and oprah. My pal over at b.michael.baker has started blogging and put up an educated post on medical insurers and oprah. What i find fascinating about Oprah is that there are only 2 type of people in the world - those who love oprah and those that have a love/hate relationship with oprah. If you truly can't stand her, you are just insane. She does way too much good for people through her love of charity and recognizing where she has come from. This goes far beyond her just giving for the sake of giving. What I can't take about oprah is exactly what B.michael.baker talks about; oprah lately is using her insane power over the consumer to push products down everyone's throat. Then she says she just does it to make peoples dreams come true. I don't mind when someone like don imus pushes a book he reads or even when trump tells us that burger king is good for us, but i don't like when someone is pushing a car that they would never drive and saying it's a dream come true.. you get a pontiac.. you get a pontiac...

Are you ready for some indoor football?
For guys this weekend it simply feels weird. something is missing - It's cold, snow on the ground and there is no football. Although we have the superbowl next week, we get a taste this weekend of what it's going to be like until september. February is the lamest sports month of the year for normal people. Normal meaning you aren't counting down the days until the daytona 500 in February. NBA is simply weak, Golf isn't that exciting and no hockey (but who cares except canada),and march madness is a month away. I sat around today wondering how am i going to spend my sundays this winter until baseball starts up. I was amused when NBC tried to trick me by sneaking a good old game of indoor football between the championship week and the superbowl. It's as if they think guys are silly enough to think the superbowl is this week and then we will get hooked on a no defense, grocery packing quarterback to lawnmower receiver guy, indoor extravaganza. Well i'm not buying i honestly think not one guy besides bon jovi (owner of the philly team that is not going to the superbowl) can watch this sport for more than five minutes. it's insane! Oh well we will miss you football. I hope the giants don't suck next year and i am rooting for the eagles since i am against anything that is associated with boston, new england or clam chowder!

WIN A PRIZE!!!
As you may or may not know I have been in the shirtblog labs studying the t-shirt business. I've been trying to master the craft testing screen printing and heat transfers. I'm almost there and ready for business. The silly part is i'm trying to be a one stop shop, design, production, marketing, and technology with a little help from J9. Hopefully, when i start the 5 shark readers will buy. So here's the deal.
All this stuff is hard, the wedding, work, shark blog - i've hit a roadblock. I'm looking for your ideas for t-shirts. If I like it and use it - I send you a free t-shirt any size - it's that sample. No forms to fill out, no rules that exempt family and friends since that would exclude my readers and no strings attached - essentially i take your idea and take it to the promise land while you see me on QVC pushing your idea.
JU8T TYPE YOUR IDEAS IN THE COMMENTS OR IF YOU ARE A SHARKBLOG VOYEUR SEND ME AN EMAIL Try to keep it clean!
The shirt to your left is our first winner and he doesn't even know it. All it took was one email. Baby Bruce will be sporting this shirt at central park catching all the ladies eyes from the comfort of his stroller.

Sharky Awards versus the Oscars
Every day I wander through some blogs and When I surfed over to Gothamist, I was kinda shocked. On the front page they actually blogged about something as opposed to just linking up to the ny post. Good blogging there is usually found in the sections and interviews. But after I read their article on the oscar nominees, I realized why they don't. The claim is that Paul Giamatti was snubbed because he is ugly, calls Scorsese a snooz and didn't even mention Million Dollar Baby - which is in an early lead for the more prestigious movie of the year sharky. Sideways is an enjoyable film, funny and the wings guy nails that role. However, it does not deliver an oscar winning knockout, like clint eastwood and Hillary swank. My buddy Barry is right on with sideways - there is no way Paul Giamatti's character lands that babe in the end. Sorry for ruining it. She's georgeous and he is a going nowhere fast writer with a major drinking problem, minus self esteem and plus baggage.
Scorsese is one of the great american directors and will probably win best director based on the fact this movie is his best without the violence or controversy. He deserves it for goodfellas and mean streets, raging bull and taxi driver aren't bad. I have yet to see the other nominees Ray, Finding Neverland and the aviator yet so i can't make official predictions.
A few Plugs
Last night Jeannine and I checked out Chipperton vocal-tainers Shooby dooby dooby hour at Upright Citizen's Brigade. Hilarious. There is no better way to waste that much time by laughing. I still am giving this place a major plug and they sell PBR.
Also, last week checked out a great band - Brothers of industry. They play at kenny's castaways on Saturdays. Bar sucks but the band rocks. Get some free music for your ipod.

blizzard ends on the most depressing day of the year!
The blizzard is over so now the weather channel and ny1 can please shut up. You didn't even have to go outside. The picture to your left is a pedestrian sign that was squashed by an MTA bus. I saw the whole thing. The in-experienced driver of the extended bus stopped at his stop and then proceeded to floor it to pull away. The 2nd half of the bus fish-tailed and knocked the sign into oblivion. It still worked though! When he got out and i was taking a picture of it - all he said was "SHIT" and then took off.
- Did you know that today is calculated as the most depressing day of the year. I guess people get their credit card bills from xmas. What's so depressing americans don't pay their credit card bills anyway. It can't be depressing right now in a warm weather area. Beat the blues and send a TPS report to some friends.
- Kudos to the idiot who sold his forehead for advertising (37k) and kudos to snorestop for doing absolutely anything possible to promote your completely useless product. At least you did not have to hire Anna Nicole Smith. Just give it to nfl players to take before football games to breath better. I think marketing classes should now be taught at the kindergarten level and you should be put into the workforce at 7 years old.
- Wedding planning update
- Trump made money off his wedding by granting the picture rights. If anyone would like to do the same for us, please contact me and we'll work something out. Please no helicopters over the wedding site though. I love how when you get rich you don't have to pay for anything!
- Getting engaged - Awesome
- Booking a reception venue with premium open bar - Great
- locking a date for the wedding, a priest and a church - Grand
- Booking a somewhat non-cheesy wedding band - Wonderful
- Finding out that there is a friggin famous car show on the same weekend and have already booked almost all the hotels - FRIGIN PRICELESS!! don't panic i found a motel, it's not the ritz but you should probably book early and byohd (bring your own hair dryer!!

Coffee Cup Lid Reviews
I am back and I have something that really has been driving me crazy. It's been driving me mad ever since I got a full starbucks coffee spilled all over me on the subway. Was it the idiot's fault with the coffee? I think not. She actually wasn't even drinking it. The liability for this falls on Starbucks and even more so on the small coffee shops for copying their stupid cup design. They give you these awful cups and you walk and spill them all over yourself.
I am not a huge fan of starbucks, but i'm not going to go on a i hate starbucks rant. Currently, Starbucks is a very good corporate citizen. As they continue to grow into a larger company they will face more and more criticism and will have to cut benefits they offer. I mean look at Wal-mart. It used to be the best place to work and now they are facing critics from every town. Here is what i don't like about starsucks
- Basically, i don't like their coffee. I get better coffee at home with my senseo.
- I don't like their need to put one on every corner for yuppy ipod geeks to hang out in all day. Go to a bar they have coffee and i bet the bartender is more interesting than the cashier!
- I don't like how a small is a tall and grande - that's crap.
Worst of all i hate their coffee cup. You need to add a silly cardboard protector so you won't become a burn victim. Coffee leaks out the backside while you are drinking and most of all when you transport your coffee, it flies all over the place and then you have the oil dripped starbucks coffee smell on you all day.
I asked myself why do we put up with this? Well i found out that no one has ever reviewed on the go coffee cups and told them they suck really really bad! That they ruined my bagel because i spilled my coffee on it. Below I rank some recent portable cups i have used - as always my scale goes to 11
This is the worst of them all. The cup construction is weak and the always open sipper provides major spillage. It makes me crazy when I see it on the streets and it gets a big fat zero for not doing it's homework on the market! 3 bucks for a damm coffee!
Score: 0
This is your average deli coffe cup. Not the best but not that bad either. At the very least you can walk with it covered. If you uncover it, however, you are screwed. You can' lose the whole cup in a matter of seconds. For my rating you have to factor in that you didn't pay 3 bucks for it - you paid 75 cents
Score 5
This is a spill proof top. Great when you are on the run. But it's actually not 100% spill proof. When you push down on the tab with your mouth like a freak the excess liquid can spill driving you mad. This cup takes a little to get used to and you have to like styrofoam. I love styrofoam and is it that bad for the environment? na.
Score 9
This is another good design only offered at hard core delis. It has a resevoir for any spillage. There are 2 small holes with good flowage. the weakness of this cup is that it cuts down on the amount of coffee. Also, if the top does come off you are hosed.
Score 8

The small coffee shops that offer a great alternative to starbucks rock, but they forgot one thing the cup. They use the same one as the lamest place on earth. By trying to be environmentally conscious they offered customers a sucky cup and for that they get nothing.
score 0
The same people that brought you the microwaved breakfast sandwich, the munchkin, and the ultimate donut, bring you a kick ass coffee cup. YOu control the spill. It offers a top that covers the spout and then attaches to the opposite side. When you want to pick up and go again you just flip it over. Time to make the donuts guy is a genius! why hasn't dunkin donuts taken over the world like it has in boston. When i lived there i had an iv hooked up to that place. Great work dunkin donuts you rock and i'd be happy with you on every corner.
score 11

An Engagement Story!
Ok. I know you have all been waiting for this post, but honestly did you want to find out about an engagement via the web! let's get real. I did it 80's style and called everyone with a rotary phone. In order to give the shark blog readers what they want. Here is our whole engagement story - shark is getting soft on this one.
Sept. 5 2003 - We meet On this day Pepe and Donna landed in town from Colorado and we went to a Yanks-Sox game. Rich and Colleen joined us and Rich is very serious about the game! We had a few yankee crack beers and then headed out on a recommendation from the goat, Matt Fiorillo, to Pat O'briens on 88th and 2nd. Meanwhile, Jeannine and Kaitlin were celebrating their 1 year living in nyc anniversary by slugging back cocktails at the met museum. The night is a blur, with shots being poured everywhere and natty lights by the dozen, but then I saw Jeannine; My dream girl. We say she told me "nice hat punk" in reference to my yanks hat, her being a red sox die hard. Regardless we shared a natty light and found out we were both from the Hudson Valley, me from Highland and Jeannine from a rival high school, Roundout.

Typical small world discussion lead to family talk. We found out our moms' worked at the same place. When Jeannine called her mom and asked if she knew my mom, she shouted "Judy Ryan - we've been friends with them for 25 years!" Our parents had gone to Marriage Encounters together and both dads' dry sense of humor got them through it! I actually had been over Jeannine's house when I was 2 years old and jeannine was just a toddler. Here's a pic of Jeannine and Colleen on that very special first night we met. (check out the shady guy in the background checking them out)
Engagement Night - Thursday, January 13th 2005!
I finally got to pickup the ring from the shady diamond disctrict and was tired of it hidden in my underwear drawer. Thursday was the night. I called her dad to get the OK and made reservations for dinner. The hook was to lure her with a celebration of her new job at NY Presbyterian. That day her apartment lost heat and hot water so when i got there to pick her up she was in a fowl mood. I knew things would look up later. We went out for a drink at Shag in the west village and a great bartender served us up some fancy cocktails. We then headed to our favorite nyc restauarant, the Place. We had a spectacular dinner. The place is top notch and had a great bottle of wine, liberty school. This is the first time ever that Jeannine did not tackle the waitress for the cork (she collects them for her scrapbook ) We actually don't have the cork - a new beginning. Afterwards we traveled to the west coast.
Note: This is a reenactment of the "down on one knee". We came back afterwards to take pictures with Kaitlin.
Jeannine didn't have a clue because I was not nervous at all. I was ready and cool, calm and collected. It was a beautiful night about 60 degrees and we decided to head to hudson river park. This park is amazing and a true feet of the bloomberg administration. We enjoy weekend walks to battery park along the water admiring the awesome apartments we will never live in. It's a special place for us and right by Jane Street, where Jeannine lives.
We first sat on a park bench and just held hands for a bit admiring the view of beautiful jersey city. People kept sitting by us on the benches and I wasn't going to propose like that. Getting frustrated with all the activity (how dare people excercise at 11pm when i'm trying to get engaged) I asked Jeannine to take a walk to the pier. When I got to the pier i went into my "on bended knee speech". I was pretty smooth of course but as soon as i started i knew if i got tied up i would just have to drop. I sain Jeannine's full name and then dropped on one knee. As i dropped she started to realize what was going on and started to get excited. Her arms were moving like a chicken and tears started to spew out of her eyes like a sprinkler. She was moving her arms so much i couldn't get the ring on her finger and had to ask her to calm down so she didn't knock the ring into the hudson.
To this day i can't remember if she accepted or not. I had no idea where I actually proposed, but later we found out it was right on the Jane Street engraved granite.

As I turned around I realized it was right in front of the new men's bathroom - sweet. There was also a beautiful - no Barbeques sign and you all know how i love bbq.

After the proposal what did we do? jeannine yelled to a lady walking her dog - i'm getting married. She ignored her. We then told 2 guys from the village and they celebrated with us jumping up and down. What else - cell phone of course. Jeannine called her dad and said crying " dad, a boy wants to marry me" I called my mom and she was happy as well - she had no idea i was going to propose.

We came back later for a kiss!

and a picture together!

Jeannine with the new bling bling!

The original bench that i was supposed to propose on.

the park rangers that let us stay in the park after closing since we just got engaged. Jeannine chatted with them for a while.

Every girl asks what's the ring look like.. i say it's nice. Here's a sneak peak. Round cut hearts and arrows with 2 tapered baquettes on each side set in the ring.

The sky was really cool that night - ahh Jersey - I love ya!

January 16th Engagement La la land is over - get planning
I guess i didn't know what i was in for until we started looking at places and everything around the whole wedding. We actually got very lucky by finding a country club that is available in septemeber - we haven't confirmed the date yet, but here's a sneak peak of a view from the place overlooking the catskills and the 18th hole. It is awesome! I hope they serve stuff wrapped in bacon!
Not 30 seconds after the engagement did Jeannie have 25 wedding magazines. Scottish wedding, martha stewart wedding, new york metro wedding, new york upstate including vermont wedding, wedding reception ideas for crazy people - truly insane but i am enjoying it. The project manager in me is already sending out proposals for bid!
Hope you enjoyed our engagement story and can't wait to share this special day with the friends and family that are so dear to both of us!! Sharkblog will now be back to his regularly scheduled program but you'll get to hear all about wedding planning!

Where has the trapper keeper gone?
Today i have been very nostalgic about back in the day - growing up in the 80's and 90's. I'm Not digging too deep int the 80's pop culture, you can get that on vh1. I guess what brought me back to this was seeing my little cousin at 13 celebrating her first cell phone and a recent viewing of Napoleon Dynamite, a somewhat funny movie set in the era of moon boots. I can see how you want your kid to have a cell phone, but the only rule is you can't use it in class. I'm sure cell phone companies will soon offer free nights weekends and in between periods and bonus minutes at recess. What happened to not having a quarter and calling from a pay phone collect and instead of taking the charges saying " mom pick me up" as your name. As I embrace this new blog world, I thought i'd kick it old school today with a few "in my day" rants.
Ahh..The trapper keeper. You know you can't buy these anywhere anymore? I tried to find it at mead. they go for 20 bucks on ebay. But i did find a elementry school kids' new trapper keeper invention.
- Notice how no one tells jokes anymore? the art is lost opting for silly email forwards, videos and pictures. I always like a good joke.
- Whistling has been on the decline since the 50's but it is at an all time low.
- The great age of the sitcom is dead - reality tv has taken over and the next media is a vlog (video blog) where you can have everyone watch you every minute of the day.
- stewarts, a local convenience store in upstate ny, doesn't offer milk in those old school jugs anymore. Not that i bought them ever, but i liked when they were there.
- The age of the mix tape is dead. Remember spending hours making those tape mixes perfect and giving them a profound name like "summer mix 92". How is a guy going to impress his new lady? with an ipod songlist - double lame
- What happened to the the sony yellow walkman and how come the ipod doesn't come in this explosive active color.
- What happened to intelligent comedies of the brat pack and with chevy chase - old school is good but is no fletch, slapshot or caddyshack. There is no comparison at all.
- what happened to the if you'd like to make a call please hang up and try again lady - there is really no cell phone version of her
Well I can sit here and complain about it or just embrace it - there's a lot of good things that are new but we should always remember the past. I think i'll listen to the new 99 luft balloons remix w/ jay z

Guest Blogger Rant
Today we have a guest blog on what seems to be this week's subject; parking in Manhattan. One of the smartest liberals I know is Barry and i've been trying to get him to blog. He's smart and actually reads the new york times, while i just carry it to look smart. Here is something he sent me below and will be my guest serious political blogger consultant news guy.
What's great about the subject below is that is right in front of where i used to live on the upper east side and my dad got a ticket for parking there. A $100 ticket is a great way to liven your dad's spirit on mother's day! I'd really like to have this thing get towed to 38th and 12th AKA hell and see how long it takes to process this one!!!!
Barry's Gripe
Construction is perpetual in Manhattan. It is annoying but it is also necessary - progress is good. I understand that building/property owners make trade-offs based on what is sometimes called the "Quality Triangle", which states that between fast, cheap, and good, you can only achieve two of them - choose wisely. What really gets to me is when these people disregard the law, which you may have noticed is not an OPTION on the quality triangle. Want an example? This picture, taken at East 87th Street, between 2nd and 3rd in Manhattan, shows a construction trailer parked within 15 feet of a fire hydrant (s. 4-08(e)(2): the 15 feet law in NYC). This trailer has been there for over a month, and will probably remain there for at least a year. At this point, I don't care if the people get a damn ticket. I want the trailer moved to comply with the law, since I think the law was created to ensure public safety in the case of a fire. I know the head sharkblogger's dad would want to see these guys get a ticket since he did for doing the samething

A day in the life in NYC - Tourist Towing Victim or moron?
This is the true story of a an actual Manhattan towing violation from beginning to end - no details left untold. Are my friends, the Well's victim to a tourist towing scam by the nypd towing unit or did they make a rookie mistake? You decide. However, I was there every step of the way and i bring it to you the readers of shark blog! Here goes:
Background: Chris and Donna Wells are great friends and stopped in friday night for some dinner and drinks with Jeannine and friends before they head out to LI for a family party.
Friday, January 7th, 7:30PM: Wells calls from the car giving me the ETA on arrival and telling us not to wait for our dinner reservations . I tell him don't worry about it 8pm reservations means 9pm in nyc. He asks where to park. I say go by 11th ave in the 40s and look for a lot. Street parking is almost non existent in HK due to times square.
8PM - They arrive and Chris gives me no details on where he parks except that one of the lots was full. We quickly proceed to dinner.
8:30PM-10pm - We get some great drinks and chow at Momma Mexico. Donna even gets to experience a b-list star sighting of Bob the Bacheolor. Everyone is AOK!
10pm-3am - We hit several bars on the upper west side. I don't know the upper west side, but did manage to find a good dive called yogies by the beacon theatre. I lied and said blue sky by the allmans' was written there during one of their month long stints at the beacon. Next we hit other "so called" upper west side dive bars. What gives them the right to call some of these dive bars. Dive 75 is a dive bar? more like yuppie hell to me. We hit the original brother jimmies and another irish bar where there was a stalker eyeing the ladies.
3am - Chris and I go out for what else, 3 bags of chips. At this point I am in no position to make a judgement call. Chris asks if his car is ok in the parking spot. We check the sign, check the other cars and then purchase cheez doodles!
Saturday, 8th 10am - Chris goes to check car - not there and proceeds to blaim me for the judgement call i barely remember the night before. That won't hold up in court.
We first check to see the area and why we were towed? Here is the sign.

The sign states no standing m-f 8am-6pm - no violation
Chris was parked in front of the cement and orange cone? is that cone official or from a construction site?

They were doing no construction on the building that day.
Throughout the day on saturday many cars were parked in front of the orange cone with no tickets
Chris has a massachusetts license plate - ding ding ding!
Saturday 12pm - We locate the vehicle and head over to 38th and 12th or hell - semantics. When we walked over we thought he'd just get screwed and walk up and pay and get his vehicle! Here's Chris trotting in the building with a no care attitude.

but we were wrong - dead wrong. We waited in line with about 30 others and a lady took our info. Everyone sat there from 12:30 to 1:45 with no movement. THE cashier was on her break so the process stood still. This is what this hole looked like.

The best part is that everyone was from out of town. They shared war stories of being 15 minutes over the meter and being towed. One guy's wife told us that she told him not to park in the no standing zone, but he told her that wasn't for cars it was for the hookers!! One girl, travelling with 3 loser guys from philly, even exploded when her friends went outside on how out of all the restaurants in manhattan her friends picked quiznos. When you pay, you move to the next security guard who escorts you to your vehicle via a golf cart. Finally, after a license plate messup by the cashier we got out of hell at 2:45, almost 3 hours!
I must say I really enjoyed this experience and laughed along the way. Everyone who gets towed is really pretty friendly these days. No one blew a gasket and everyone will be back to nyc - hopefully they will park in a lot or try mass transit. In the end the damage is about $235 bucks. So you could have parked in a lot for 20 bucks and used the money to stay at the ritz as opposed to my shoebox studio. Victim or moron - i have no idea - i just enjoyed the ride!

Tivo sucks because I have to be subjected to this!!
This advertising monstrosity is popping up all over the west side of Manhattan. I had to get a snapshot of it! I was thinking of going to Ft. Lauderdale this weekend, but after the manequin lifeguard and lady in a jail looking sun room manger, i'm freaking going! I wonder if Panama city will compete with Fort Lauderdale by driving a spring break version with those naked manequins that freak you out at the stores. Is this the new phase of advertising? If my job was to drive this thing, i'd drive this thing off the brooklyn bridge and then kick my own ass!

Land Shark is huge in Denmark
One of my favorite movie lines of all time is the "We're huge in Belgium" line from Singles. Citizen Dick Rules!. When checking my web traffic, I found that I am getting the largest amount of foreign hits from Denmark. To the danes I say - "hvad er der i vejen mig dansk broder og afdelingssygeplejersken" or what's up my danish brothers and sisters - thanks for the support (or the spam)
- I think the comments make blogs the best - don't be shy - you don't have to be witty or smart, it's not an evite. Just don't do it while your drunk and use curse words (lynch!) - cause I can take away your freedom of comment.
- Vote for your favorite blog at the 2005 bloggie awards
- fashizzle sharkizzle your favorite site at asksnoop.com
- Post a comment at PeteTschudy.com and win a thong!!
- Check out woot.com they sell 1 item a day at a low low price and that's it. Pretty cool business idea.

A few rants for today
Here are some rants and links for today.
- This is a sign telling you to take the B line from 53rd and 7th to 59th and 7th to shop at the new cheesy time warner center. Why can't we walk 6 blocks anymore?
- Here is a photo blog entry of 2 guys in a park that is literally right next to my apartment. These guys can be found passed out later in the evening at my doorstep. I'm really not kidding. Small World!
- Healthy people are trying to close McDonalds at Hospitals. What are they serving it to the patients? Hospitals are depressing enough and now I have to get a salad when i'm there? How bout they look at how McDonalds markets to urban youth and are packed after school ends.
- I just found this one but am hoping it will go through - a surf park in manhattan on randalls island
- I overheard a guy saying that only 6 cents out of every dollar gets to tsunami victims. Life is about talking points and this guy should get off that one. What a moran. Are we going to ship water across the world. Money and prayers is the best thing we can do. I recommend americares as a viable charity.

Thanks Santa
I've had a long battle with digital cameras. I bought a really good Pentax, but it was so small it broke in my pocket after a week. Plus their warranty didn't cover fat guy in small pants with a camera in his pocket. Well I just tested my new camera yesterday and here are a few shots from it around my neighborhood. Not too bad..
